Thanks for this post, Joe! We are trying to "do better" on our campus. Our fall student leadership conference will break all the traditional conference rules: there will be no keynote, no workshops. While the changes are causing some planning committee members discomfort, we are discussing these feelings as we go, and we remain committed to moving forward. We are striving to model the idea that from risk can come brilliance. (We have also discussed the possibility of failure.) Our institution has a Common Theme every year, and the 2012-13 theme is "Creativity, Innovation, and Vision." The central message behind that theme is that "transformative ideas can come from unexpected places." Our conference is all about the "unexpected." Upon their arrival, participants will find no rows of chairs, no podium, no PowerPoint. The focus will be on generating, testing, refining, and pitching ideas, and there will be technology everywhere. It is my hope that if our students experience a new kind of conference, they will be more likely to be the conference innovators you speak of. Interestingly enough, the students and the more "senior" staff on our planning committee are loving this--it's the younger professionals that are having the most difficulty.
